Whether you are considering them or you already have Invisalign, learning how to clean your Invisalign clear aligners is important. Although it isn’t a difficult task, it does require including it as a regular part of your daily oral health care routine.
What You Need to Clean Invisalign Aligners
The first question everyone asks is, “Do I need special cleaning stuff to keep my tray aligners clean?” The good news is that you can clean your Invisalign aligners without any expensive cleaning supplies. All you really need is a soft toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste or a small dab of liquid dish soap. We do recommend that you use a dedicated toothbrush rather than just using your regular everyday brush.
Invisalign also makes a cleaning solution for tray aligners called Invisalign Cleaning Crystals. They work by dissolving the crystals in warm water and soaking your trays for 10 to 20 minutes. While not required, it is recommended that you soak your trays at least every few days as a deep-cleaning method.
Regular, non-colored denture cleaners will also work to soak your trays. If you use colored cleaners, they may stain or tint your trays. Follow package instructions if you opt for this method.
If you don’t want to purchase Invisalign Cleaning Crystals or denture cleansers, you probably have something in your cupboard that will work. Alternative methods:
- Hydrogen Peroxide — Mix an equal amount of warm water with 3% peroxide, then soak your trays for 15 to 30 minutes. Rinse and brush your aligners thoroughly after soaking.
- Distilled White Vinegar — Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts warm water and soak trays for 15 to 30 minutes. You can also add a small amount of baking soda (1/2 teaspoon or less) to the vinegar/water mix for foamy cleaning. Thoroughly rinse and brush your aligners afterward.
As you can see, there are many alternatives for keeping your tray aligners clean. It is an easy task, and once you make it a regular part of your daily routine, it will be even easier.
Developing a Daily Routine and Sticking to It
Keeping your tray aligners clean should become a part of your daily routine. When you remove your trays for meals, you should get into the habit of rinsing them before placing them in the carrying case. Always brush and floss after meals before reinserting your tray aligners.

Remember to wear your tray aligners for 20 to 22 hours every day (we prefer closer to the 22-hour goal). Although nightly soaking isn’t required, it is a good idea to keep your trays free of bacteria that can collect in your mouth throughout the day. We do recommend that you invest the time to soak your trays at least 3 to 4 times per week.
A quick reminder — many types of toothpaste have abrasives and can scratch your tray aligners. Please make sure you are using non-abrasive toothpaste. If you aren’t sure, please contact our office and ask about a preferred cleaning method. If you are not sure about your toothpaste, please use regular liquid dish soap for brushing your trays.
