Halloween treats are a seasonal favorite as you plan your costume and get ready to haunt your neighborhood. You may be wondering what candy you can actually eat with your braces. Don’t worry. There are plenty of braces-friendly Halloween treats, including a lot of your candy loot. Our list may surprise you.

Trade These Treats to Your Friends

As always, with braces, there is a list of foods that you should avoid. These are the types of candies and treats that may cause damage to your braces. To avoid having to make an emergency trip to the orthodontist for repairs, trade the treats on this list to your friends for more braces-friendly Halloween treats.

Because the goal of preventing damage to your braces is the same, this list will look very similar to the restrictions you already know about. Sticky, chewy, hard, and crunchy are still not good for your braces. Although this is not a complete list, here are some of the specific things you should avoid:

  • Gum (sorry, no Bazooka Joe this year, but you can still enjoy the jokes)
  • Toffee (Heath bars are out)
  • Sugar Daddies, Milk Duds, and similar candy
  • Licorice
  • Tootsie Rolls, Starburst, caramels, and other chewy candy
  • Hard candies, including suckers
  • Candy bars with nuts (Snickers, Pay Day, Almond Joy, etc.)
  • Gummy Bears, Lifesaver Gummies, and other “gummy” treats

You may be thinking there isn’t much left, but you can still have a great Halloween by trading with your friends for the treats you can have.

Indulge in These Braces-Friendly Halloween Treats

All the pumpkin pie is yours. Just grab the whole pie, slather it with whipped cream, and dig in. We tease. You have to share, but pies are on the list of treats you can enjoy, except for the pecan pie. As with your regular braces-friendly diet, you need to keep in mind whether the food you are about to eat will damage your braces. Cakes, soft cookies (without nuts), muffins, and donuts are all permitted.

On the candy aisle, we can add these specific treats:

  • Sweetarts, Spree, Smarties
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
  • Hershey’s Kisses (without nuts, of course)
  • M&Ms and Reese’s Pieces (be aware of the candy coating; it can damage your braces)
  • 3 Musketeer bars and other nougat-filled candy
  • Mint candies (enjoy your York moment or head off to the Andes)
  • Powder-based candy (Pixie Stix, Fun Dips, and similar)
  • Kit Kat bars

ALL the chocolate is yours. White, milk, and dark, and even the raspberry chocolate. Please don’t freeze your chocolate, but as long as you avoid nuts, you can eat all the chocolate. You can also enjoy fresh fruits, chocolate-covered pretzels, and apple cider.
